Can anyone help with this? I live in the UK and recently I closed and paid off my Irish credit card account in person, and a few days later, receied a letter from Bank of Ireland informing me they were applying a 40Euros fee for the account closure. Apparently they have been taking 40Euros from my account every April for a few years, but I have no record of this in my statements.
Can I stop them taking this final 40Euros?
Thanks in advance
Caroline

Check the T's & C's for the card. Any charges they can make will be listed there in black and white. That should answer your question.

£40 for account closure does seem a bit absurd to me though but that doesn't mean to say they can't charge it if you agreed to it when you took the card out.

    Different countries have different rules.
It is always advisable to check T & C before committing to the card.
Are you saying that you have statements for previous years but there is no record of this charge or you have not got the statements now? If you do not have them you could ask for copies but then again in all probability you will be charged for this.
It is not clear whether you pay an annual fee or whether this is a one off closure fee.
If the fee is a one off for closing your account then it would not appear on any statement would it?
One last point, you say that you paid the account off in person - was this just paying in sufficent to bring account to nil or did you tell them that the account was to be closed and if so what was their response? If they failed to mention this to you, you may have a case for a refund.

The Irish government charges everyone who holds a credit card in Ireland a yearly 40 Euro fee per credit card held. So this is why your bank is charging you. It seems very unfair to me.
