This company went bust last year but are still charging me (and many others) the £40 annual subscription. I'd like to get a refund and the payment cancelled going forward and have been in touch with my credit card and with Stripe (the payment processor) but not getting anywhere with either of them. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

What did your credit card issuer say?  Surely this is a simple chargeback and ask them to cancel the continuous payment authority?

Credit card asked me have I contacted the company (which no longer exists) to cancel the recurring payment. Stripe said "....we don’t have the authority to take any action on behalf of businesses using Stripe, including cancelling your subscription. The best way to take action is by getting in touch with the business you purchased from."

Who do you bank with? They have the right to stop payments

Forget Stripe, you have no relationship with them.  What did the credit card issuer say when you told them the company no longer exists and it’s impossible to contact them?  Which credit card issuer/bank?

For a start what date did the company ceast trading?
Give that the the card company. So long as it is prior to payment being taken. You have a right for non receipt.
They also have to cancel the CPA when you ask them.
You will need to get passed front line call center staff & to disputes team to resolve. 👍
