Mobile phone - upfront cost

Hi all,

Looking for a bit of help/advice on my recent situation.

I just bought a Samsung Galaxy s24 at mobiles.co.uk and paid £79 upfront for the handset which seemed acceptable at the time to find out 2 days later it had gone down to £29 pounds.

After phoning them up to explain my frustration they said they wouldn't honour the price or do anything further.

Is there anything I could do apart from just except I got a bit stung?

If you bought online and it's within 14 days of receipt, you may be able to return it.

Has the overall deal changed, or just the up-front price?  Are you comparing like-for-like?

You haven't been stung.  You were offered a price you were happy with and accepted it.  Prices change, sometimes you're unlucky.  Would you be concerned if it had jumped in price by £50 two days later?  Of course not.  I'm afraid that's the nature of modern retail, prices are often dynamic, rapidly so.

As @Aylesbury_Duck said, prices change.  If the supplier had come back to you after a few days and said there had been a price increase and they wanted another £50 from you would you have paid up?  I suspect I know the answer.  There was no harm in asking, but refusal may offend.
  • Surely it makes no difference though. You’ve paid an amount upfront and will then pay off the rest of the phone over. 12/24/36 month period. If you pay a higher amount to begin with, you’ll pay less per month than someone who has only paid £29.

Exactly right. Often you can choose between various upfront charges - £0 through to £100 or more - each of which would give you a different monthly amount. The best one is what suits you - some people prefer to pay as little as possible upfront, for others an upfront payment that reduces the monthly payment is preferable....

If you paid more up front then you will pay less interest over the time of the contract as well (assuming it was not interest free). Marketing is all about smoke and mirrors.
