Corded or cordless Lawnmower?

My Mountfield Princess keeps making strange grumbling sounds and cuts out if I keep pushing it. I think I’ve burnt the motor out from forcing it to cut too much grass but I’m disappointed in it because the cheap Flymo lasted longer with similar usage. I’d like a cordless mower but I have a few queries. Are they worth the extra money? How long will the battery last? Do I have to keep the battery charged all the time, including over the winter? I’ve read that they’re heavy and I’m wondering if that might be even more tiring than dealing with a cable on a corded model.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I’m useless with measurements but I think the lawn is ‘medium’ sized. It takes ages mowing it with the 34cm one I have now. It needs to be electric because I don’t want to be putting a filthy lawnmower in my car to get it serviced.

We bought a Mountfield battery mower when outr Flymo died after years of use. The battery is supposed to last 20 mins but doesn’t even run out when cutting our lawn and still has charge left after 30 mins of cutting.

Like many things, it's likely the batteries on mowers will last according to the manufacturing quality, but even my cheapo Lidl batteries, 5 years old, hold their charge for months in winter, so I'd not worry about that. My expensive chain saw's battery has lasted without appreciable deterioration since 2018.

  • if your lawn is suitable, try a robot lawnmower, I have a Worx Landroid, it cuts the grass every day in summer, does the edges once a week, never any waste to get rid of and a similar price to a decent battery lawnmower. Also customer service is superb, emailed them with a charging base problem out of warranty, a replacement arrived in 2 days free of charge. See it here

The battery is going to add to the weight but how much will depend on the model.
Remembering to charge it so that you can mow when you want.
An electric lead one is always ready and a little lighter.

I’d love one but there’s no outdoor sockets or anywhere under cover to put the charging station.

    Hi
My flymo cordless mower has two 20v batteries which go in together.
Someone has handwritten ST on one battery and HT on the other.
    What does this mean?
And should I be putting them in a certain way round. I.e. one at the top and the other at the bottom in the mower? or doesn't it matter which way?
Or could it correspond to the chargers somehow? (The chargers aren't marked).

I love being cordless, so a vote for that in preference to the corded mower.
