You can try to convince your mum to help you, pull out or take the chance.
i understand her point of view but a normal logical parent would want to help even if they don’t agree with the process.
moving it out of your account won’t remove it from your statements,

Then this may be an issue for 6-7 months from the gift (until it falls off the 6th statement).
True, although even then you'd probably need to be able to demonstrate you'd have been able to save the money yourself. In practice that ought to be doable as you'd be proving that for £4k anyway, so it's not a big leap to assume you could do it for another £4k but... it's just worth bearing in mind.

Although as a small aside, it seems I was harsher on my wife than the solicitor was in getting her to prove where her money came from!! I was genuinely shocked how little they actually wanted when it came to it.

Well, we may have light at the end of the tunnel, I have spoken with my mum and she has a birth certificate and evidence of her state pension which I am hoping may be suitable as a "letter from the benefits agency" as per the proof of identity checklist on the gvt website.  I will speak to the sols to double check.

She isn't happy about these bank statements but said we will cross that bridge if we come to it, so I think I may have progress.  She is very stubborn but understand she is stressed about things since my dad passed and she is essentially having to run a home on her own after not looking after bills or finances herself for about 40 years!

You need to ask your solicitor what they accept as ID, I wouldn't expect them to say it's "whatever the checklist on the gvt website says".

Yup, hence I have emailed them to check.  If they won't accept either of these things, then at least I will know before losing out
