Commercial and domestic meters
I am just taking over all the bills after I lost my husband. We used to have a business and all our meters are still business ones. Will I be better off changing them all to domestic meters? I just dont understand it all! Any help gratefully received. To be clear we dont have a business any more.

You would certainly be better off on a domestic tariff than a commercial one. Who is your current supplier?0
-
Unless you had a very large supply of over 100 kVa the meter is the same.
Are you still in a contract ?
Who is your supplier? You need to be with one that does both business and domestic so you can swop.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
I am currently with EDF but the contract is coming to an end so I am able to change now.0

Are you still running a business or has the property that the meters supply changed from commercial to domestic?0

So the business closed, a while back actually , and the electric came from the house meter and the barn0

You can only really have a domestic meter if it's a domestic supply - if it's a barn it's "non-domestic".0

Too many unknowns really.
1 meter or 2 ( barn and house) - in each case, standard single phase, standard 3 phase 100A etc
(What sort of power was used in barn - light workshop or store etc - few lights, few standard 13A sockets for power tools for OH working alone or occasional use heater or say more industrial machinery - 415V etc )
As a general rule over last 2 years business power rates generally have been far more expensive thwn discounted donestic - and for house billing - would have meant no EBSS (£66/7 monthly) no EPG discounts (16p/34p on electric discounts per kWh etc.)
If 2 meters / bills - was barn addressed as to Business ?
So ask your supplier re tariffs / rates.
You may well need two domestic supplies if currently split.
You might then be paying 2 sets of standing charges going forward - that's now £200+ per year in some regions.
What will you be using barn for going forward - how much power is that likely to need (light, heat etc ) ?
If quite low - you might be able to get one meter and feed disconnected and live with an extension from house supply - but in reality the short to medium term costs are likely to mean not worth the effort. And going forward you might not even really have the headroom on home supply anyway - e.g. if needed to fit ashp rather than gas or oil boilers etc.0
