You are panicking before there is anything to panic about.
Move house, get G&E DD set up for say £80 if possible.
If they want more ask why, they can’t make you pay £300.

They will no know how much to set it at and neither will G&E supplier.
Then get a referral to Octopus energy, £50 credit for your mum & Dad.
Set up online account, change Direct Debit to £5 if you want.
Then when a bill is produced go online or call and pay the remaining amount plus say £10.
As you have a DD set up you pay the standard tariff.
Ive been doing it for 18 months now.
They raised the DD and I went in and set it at £5 again.
I over pay my bill by £10 a month, I’m now £200 in credit.
This method works for me and 3 very old neighbours.
I set up a DD from my bank for each of them, they give me cash and I pay the bills.
I read their meters, login to their account and submit details.

If your parents are not computer savvy you could run the G&E account for them.

Some people I know still have a few thousand kWh of gas from 2 years ago to use up, the over stated usage
    before prices went up.
    Very naughty 😏 but cheap.

@catladyjo    You might like to get a letter of authority from your parents so you can talk to the suppliers on your parent's behalf.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    I think you'll find it's called Fraud.
  • Thank you all for your comments and help.
I asked the council lettings officer this morning and she didn't know, so I'll be contacting Cadent and National Grid later to see if they can help find out who the supplier is.
    Thanks again!
