on £700 odd a month take home the budget looks tight. i left home at 17 and on the 18th birthday i landed myself with loans and credit cards in order to ensure my rental property was just as well established as anyone elses. no beanbags for me.

my biggest regret was getting in debt. over the years i flogged off most of what i have brought and spent a long time paying it off. Now financially speaking I am great guns, but it was a long road.

try saving £500 per month for 3 months and stick to a tiny budget at home. you will then know whether you can afford the bills or not. if you dip into it, consider it debt

yes son get out there but share a house, will cut down on your outgoings.
I left home at 17 and moved into a shared house I spent the next 12 years running up debts, spending too much money on booze and drugs and just wasting the rest. But i wouldn't swap those times for the world I did some mad things but also made some lifelong friends out of the people I shared with. When i moved in with my now wife I had a few clothes a stereo(most important make sure you waste a load of money on a decent stereo , adecent one is an investment and will last you years.), a CD collection and a whole load of debts.
While I admire your level headed attitude , at 17 you should be out tasting the world, theres plenty of time to be sensible.
In the last 10 years I (with the help of my wife)have bought a house in Oxford(god knows how we managed that with my credit rating at the time), got married , started and built up my own building company , even managed to buy half of a large investment propertya n am about to embark on a five year mortgage free plan. So don't go panicing too much about making the right decisions now. Whilst i love my life now I would have hated this life at 17
You seem like a decent sensible lad and I'm sure you will make the right decision for yourself, just remember to have a bit of fun whilst your doing it.
I wish you all the very best and with an attitude like yours I'm sure you will go far.

    Good luck.
  • I can't add anything to what's already been said, except to wish you

Ooooooooh, I've thought of something...When can you join your company pension scheme? Now that does make me sound like an old duffer, doesn't it?:D
