Income protection

If I move to a job that does not offer occupational sick pay and only SSP, what is the best way to protect my income to be able to have more income should I need time off sick? Hopefully that makes sense?

  • You can get illness / critical illness cover but it isn't cheap and generally no where near as good or long lasting as what some employers offer. Eg 6 months full pay then up to 5 years at 60% pay which is quite common in financial services for example.
I'd certainly factor it in when comparing moving to a different job when you are comparing the pay for both roles.
Also look at life insurance / pensions, if your current firm has a decent pension there will likely be good death in service benefits with it Eg 4-8 to times salary. Depending on your age that amount of life insurance isn't cheap either.
