I have to say that I've always found court offices to have long delays and all the customer service skills of a Dr's receptionist.

The best advice is to phone the online money claim number and then press the number (think it's 3 off the top of my head) for defendant. This puts you through to the call centre. There will be a long wait but they are better than calling the court office directly..

Explain the situation to them. Because of the delays it's the date of posting that counts.

We had applied to have an order for hearing cancelled (as the claimant had claimed against the wrong company) and the court office had a three week backlog of correspondence, which meant it was apparently our fault for calling to pay the application fee! The call centre was able to sort in 20 minutes.

In the future, just use first class and get a proof of postage certificate from the PO.

For very important/vital things, consider sending from 2 separate locations.

First class is deemed to have been delivered in 2 working days.

Signed for just gives the receiving party an easy “get-out” as by refusing to sign the item cannot be properly delivered

While this used to be true these days the chance of being asked to sign for anything by Royal Mail is remote, pretty much everything has an indecipherable scribble made by the postie and shoved through the letterbox. The signed for part of a delivery is pointless now, what you're paying for is the tracking, which may or may not be required.

For legal documents (like your response and defence) you want Special Delivery.
