Car gear Not working 😞

Hi everyone, hope you're all well.

I haven't driven my audi petrol, manual 07 plate over a year and it's been parked in a friend's garage. No one sadly started it.

However, I had to jump start the car with leads as battery is completely dead.

The gears don't physically move side to side. Only move in 1 direction up and down ie 2 to 4 and back. But don't move side to side.. can remain in neutral position aswell. But not move side to side or any other gear.

This happens with and without pressing clutch. Also with engine started and off.

But let's say if I put it in gear 2. Slowly let the clutch go, the car does move.

Any ideas as to what this can be ?

The gear selector on the gearbox has seized.

When you move the lever back and forth, it pulls/pushes a cable that is connected to one selector.

When you move it side to side, it pulls/pushes another cable on another selector on the gearbox.
If one is seized the lever will only move one way.

It's common in VAG products from around this year when they have been left stood.
So you might find some videos online regarding getting to the stuck selector, lubing it up and freeing it off, like this one.

  • Try running it till it’s warm then ease it away in whatever gear works. You might find it eases off with a mix of warmth and movement.

If I leave the camper van for a few weeks the gearbox is a nightmare for the first few miles, then it starts to work as the oil warms and circulates. It soon reverts to 'just fine'.
