Crossed gas meters - confused about meter SN and MPRN

I just moved into a newbuild flat in a block and discovered that the gas meter serial number registered against my account by British Gas is not the number that's actually written on my meter. I'm at flat 14 and the serial number they have is actually the serial number for Flat 22 (it's in the box next to mine). I gave BG the serial number for my actual meter (with my flat number written on it, and confirmed with a burn test) and they told me that it is registered against Flat 6.
I understand that this is a case of crossed meters, but I am confused about whether this means the MPRNs are also crossed, or just the serial numbers. British Gas told me that the MPRNs are associated with the address, so the MPRN they have for my address cannot be wrong. But I read in another thread on here that the MPRN is linked to the serial number. So what I would like to know is whether my MPRN on my account is correct, or whether Flat 6 has my MPRN incorrectly registered against their address as well as my meter.
My gas meter is not smart, so the readings I have sent BG have been from my actual meter, so the bill has been correct. But Flat 6 is supplied by Octopus, so if flat 6 actually has my MPRN, would that mean that I'm actually not supplied by British Gas at all, but by Octopus?
So far, I have told British Gas about the incorrect serial number via instant message and they told me they would get back to me in 2 weeks. That was just over a week ago. My first gas bill is due to be paid in a couple of days and I am unsure about whether I should pay this or not. I already paid my electricity bill, also supplied by BG, as there was no issue with that.
Thanks

Sadly, our expert @Dolor has been banned, but his advice in this thread (and several others) may be helpful.1

It is a common problem with new-builds. It is often the result of the dwelling being given plot numbers, when the gas/electric supply is ordered but the plot numbers not being the same as the house/flat numbering when the project is completed.1

Don't waste time talking to customer service droids. Raise a formal complaint. It's the only way to get them to do anything.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.2
