British Gas - Back Billing - anyone had success

I am going to take on a problem that a family has and try and help resolve with back billing as British Gas have been estimating their bill for over 6-7 years. They have been paying by Direct Debit so didnt really pay much attention until they received a bill for £2k and were told that even that is estimated. They had a letter over 2 years ago to say that they are migrating the account to a new billing/reading etc. The bottom line is after giving them the reading from a meter that the family thought was replaced when the account was migrated the bill has gone upto just over £6k.

Has anyone dealt with anything similar and can some point me in the direction of an email for British Gas that I can use to address this.

Thanks

Have they been providing meter readings for all that time, or at any time?

It all comes down to what actions the family took. If they have been providing meter readings for the past 5/6 years and British Gas didn't use them then that is covered by back billing. If they have not been providing readings and also didn't bother to check their bills then that is not covered by back billing and they almost certainly owe the money. If the latter I would try to claim back billing anyway because it costs nothing to try, but I'd expect it to fail.

There are other considerations. Do they have a mortgage? And have they been defaulted yet? Protecting their credit history might be important. There's a lot of different things to take into account.
    Good Luck.
