Offered Refund

At Christmas, I decided to take an offer to buy something on credit with Curry's.  I was accepted (e-mails received) but once I arrived at Curry's I was declined.

I queried this with the credit company, called Creations, and each time they thought I was complaining because I'd been refused credit.  In effect, I was complaining because I had been accepted for credit only to be refused after travelling 20 miles to my nearest Curry's branch.

It turns out, my complaint has been upheld, and they are offering me £100 compensation - which I think is fair and acceptable.

To receive this £100, however, they have asked for "Please can you forward a copy of your bank statement showing your name, address, sort code and account number in order for me to process the refund please?"

I don't particularly want to do this - what options should I present to Creations as an alternative method for receiving the compensation.

They obviously need a way to get the money to you so if they don't do cash or cheques then a bank transfer is the only way.  To do a transfer they would need your name (as used by your bank) the sort code and account number.  They don't need the address.  But given so many people give their name wrong for these things the copy of the bank statement makes sense.  You may go by Ad Name but your bank might know you as Adelaide Sur-Name so providing the bank statement makes it straight forward.

I would have thought with a creation account they might already have a lot of this and it's a known thing so not sure what's the problem unless you think it's a scammer's email?

Why do you not want to give them your bank acc details?

Black out all transactions & leave name, address, sort & acc no.
They can do nothing with it other than pay you.

TBH, it will be the only method they have to pay.
My concern was that the details could be used for some nefarious reason.  If they can do nothing with the data, other than pay me, then I am fine to proceed.

I think I was a little bit nervous to provide all my details in one screenshot.  Considering I was rejected for credit once I arrived at the store I think it's likely that they don't have any information on me.  They have also removed the search from my records - this could take 28 days.  I'm comfortable it is not a scam as it is a direct reply to an e-mail chain that has been going on for 2 months.  My next step was the Financial Ombudsman, considering their stance that I was complaining about being declined, but they have now accepted that the e-mails I received indicated I was accepted for credit prior to making the 40 mile round trip to the nearest store - which was where I was rejected.

When you were approved for credit didn't you have provide you details at that point?
  • You should ask if they can issue a cheque payable to you. This traditional method doesn't require sharing bank details electronically, and you can deposit the cheque at your bank.

That would require the person issuing the cheque to share their bank details with the OP, maybe they don't want to do that for the exact same reasons as the OP.  In the middle ages, when I used to use cheques, I noticed that when I had to request a copy of a cheque, the receiving account number and sort code had been written on the back (so Currys/Creations could still get the OPs bank details).

Issuing a cheque may be a reasonable solution but would they have the right to reduce the amount to cover admin since it would be at the OPs request?

Just send them a statement, redact the transactional detail if it makes you feel better. You are dealing with a 'reputable organization' not a Facebook vendor.
I also don't trust sharing my bank details with anyone else. Who knows what can happen? The digital space is so unsafe. But as an option for refunds, I prefer using apps like PayPal. They aren't the best ones, and it takes time to get money there. But it's at least something.

Nothing nefarious can happen, your bank account details have been on cheques for decades and nothing happens.

Using services like Paypal is more of a risk as you are allowing an unregulated organisation to break the chain and make decisions on outcomes.

What do you think can happen with your bank details?

The only thing anyone could do with them is set up a Direct Debit... Just ask J Clarkson 😶‍🌫️

If you have ever had a cheque book, these has these details on & people never had any worries.

Afraid if you want the Good will pay out, you will have to provide them, as that will be the only way they can pay you.

    Strange
My banks verify that the name and sort code and account number match
Do you think that creation don't use such a system?
( I do accept that some  accounts with banks like Metro don't seem to like to be verified)
