Barclaycard Freedom Alterrnatives?

Hi. I’ve had an email advising me that Barclaycard Freedom is going in June and I’ll be transferred to Barclaycard Cashback. I’m really disappointed, especially as the cashback is rubbish and can only be applied back to your credit card. I’ve looked online but there are so many credit cards available, so wondered if anyone knew of any credit card that is similar to Barclaycard Rewards?
Thank you in advance.

Where are all these non-rubbish Visa/Mastercards?

The only better % wise is their Barclaycard Avios offering. However, Avios points could be devaluated at any time and including transfer partner Nectar which could also be discontinued / devalued at any time.

Barclaycard Rewards gives free usage abroad in addition to the limited cashback.

You can get 1% (£15 p.m. max) cashback with a debit card.

This is true, but the points are transferred monthly so the risk is limited. First sign of this happening I'd stop spending on the Avios card immediately. I'd be very surprised if there was zero notice (they gave some notice when they devalued from 1.6 to 1.33 Avios->Nectar).

    My shouts would be:
    • Barclaycard Avios (which you might be able to migrate your Freedom Rewards card to via the Barclaycard app) - automatically convert the points to Nectar on the BA website for an effective 0.66% reward redeemable at Sainsburys (incl petrol stations), Argos and Ebay
    • Nectar Amex Card - effectively 1% back, redeemable at Sainsburys, Argos and Ebay. £30 annual fee after first year
    • Santander Edge Up credit card - 1% cashback, boosted to 2% in 1st year, max £15/month. £3/month fee. Perfect on spend of around £800ish pm in Y1 and £1500ish thereafter
    • Natwest/RBS Reward Credit card - 1% cashback at supermarkets, 0.25% elsewhere. No fee if you hold a Reward current account, otherwise £24 annual fee
  • I can recommend Santander Edge card. Certainly for the first year anyway. I can only use amex for about 50% of my spending so have looked elsewhere this year. I think this is the best card if you want actual cashback rather than points, and it gets paid to you every month as well. The £3 a month fee sounds off-putting, but I still work out with more cashback than on the alternatives.

Essentially stop spending at £750 and you'll secure a £12 net payment (1.6% cashback effectively) in the first year. In the second year you need to be spending £900+ per month for it to be a great deal (but no more than £1500). That might be incentivising spend though, which would likely defeat the objective.

Just a brief update - there is another devaluation of the Avios / Nectar transfer rate happening in a few weeks.

... meaning the Barclaycard will fall from having an equivalent reward rate of 0.66% to 0.5%, which is still comfortably the best rate for a fee free Visa/Mastercard.
