Can you trace a Motor Vehicle Trade Plate to the registered keeper

On 8th December 2023 a vehicle crashed into the front of my house, causing approximately £2500 worth of damage and drove off without stopping. The vehicle was abandoned about 1/2 mile away as it was damaged which I assume was as a result of the collision.

CCTV footage revealed the vehicle responsible was displaying a red Trade Plate in the rear window. The number was clearly visible and so this information was passed to the Police.

To date, I have had no contact from the Police, not even a Crime Reference number!

Is there any way the owner of the Trade Plate can be traced as I cannot help but form the impression the Police have done nothing

I expect they can (otherwise not much point in them!). Have you tried asking the DVLA in the same way as for any other reg number?

Have you chased the police? Are your home insurers on the case?

Did the CCTV also capture the vehicle registration plate? Or have you gotten it from the abandoned car etc?

Has your insurers checked the MID to see the insurer of the vehicle based on its registration plate? Similarly you or they can get the registered keepers details from the DVLA. It may be easier to trace them whoever it shows there instead of directly to the garage that was in control of the vehicle at the time. The insurers will be the RTA insurers unless they can show a more relevant policy was in force at the time (ie the drivers trade insurance)

In principle I imagine you can get the information from the DVLA/VOSA in the same way you can buy the registered keepers but googling does show the equivalent to the V888 form

Trade plates are quite tricky to get and renewed annually, and only available to someone who has motor trade insurance, so it won't be difficult for your insurance company to find out who the plate is registered to. There are also restrictions on when they can be used.
  • Can YOU? No.
    Can the police/your insurer? Yes.
    Will they...? Different question.

The answer should be the same as your insurer... your insurer after all inherits your rights when they settle your claim. You can get details from DVLA and MID in exactly the same way as your insurer can just they press PF5 on the TPV page to get a DVLA request thats sent digitally whereas you fill in a V888 form, both have to pay £2.50.

Yes, if you have been in an accident with a vehicle you can get the details. For a one off query its £10, for those doing regular checks they have a subscription model.
