It really isn't an issue.  Many religions don't have a change of names on marriage.  Married couples still have joint accounts.
  • It really shouldn't be an issue, but banks seemed determined to make it so. My wife wanted to carry on using her maiden name for work (Prunella Wibble),  but still be able to use her married name (Mrs Dibble) for other things. It seemed that her bank had never heard of such a thing before. In the end they put both surnames in the account, so only the bank knew her as Prunella Wibble Dibble and either name would generally work. After a few years though they decided that this was too sensible and would have to change. It's still not sorted after 20 years of marriage. Fortunately moving to transfers away from cheques has improved matters - cheques just depend on the whim of whoever handles them.

some names have been changed for privacy, sadly. I never did get to marry the lovely Prunella Wibble.

I saw just today that there is even more of an issue in Japan - where if you get married your MUST change your name by law - 95% of the time it's for the wife to do so - causing all sorts of expense and hassle

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
