August is peak travel time.  Are you looking for one-way flights?  Most airlines that fly transatlantic will charge a lot for one-way tickets, in some cases it can be more than a return.  You could look at buying a return ticket and then "missing" the return leg.  Airlines don't like it but doing it as a one off shouldn't cause any issues.

Border control officers also tend not to like people travelling on one-way flights so could cause problems at immigration. Better to get a return which has an easily changeable return date.
Whilst what you say is correct generally (and the Norse Atlantic website even warns of this when searching one-way) I was working on the basis that someone going there to study would have a study/student visa so it wouldn't be an issue at the border as @Voyager2002 says.

Lad has been accepted for a study year in US, we're looking at flights now and was wondering if anybody had any tips for decent prices?

Flying from anywhere in England, early August.

I've looked at Skyscanner and we're looking at £1k+
The air fare will be minor when compared with tuition fees.

He will also need to arrange a student visa (and probably applying for that will mean providing evidence of the necessary finance).

Definitely find an outbound in August and return in December to the nearest international airport.  Then an internal flight return.  Book it asap because December will be busy.

We've all seen the cheesy American Christmas films but I'm sure there's a big dollop of reality in some of them.

    Congratulations to your son.

Edited: and look for his return in January as soon as they are available.
