£40k to invest

I have £40k to invest.  I have had this in savings for a while, but want to invest it so I will get a better return.
I also have  a stocks and shares ISA. The company I was with sold out to a larger one and they have my money sitting 'as cash until I tell them what to invest it in'. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Without being specific to your situation (that would be advice, which is a regulated activity), a SIPP is often a great place for investments. If you need the money sooner then coming up with a plan for getting it into an ISA over a couple of years is good. As for what to invest in, that will depend on your goals, risk appetite and time frame - if 10+yrs and no further preference then generally as cheap a global equities index tracker as possible is a good starting point.

To get a sensible answer you need to give more details about yourself e.g.

    Age?
    Employed?
    Pension provision?
    Risk appetite?
When you might need the S&S ISA money?

  • Depends how much risk you want too take in terms of what to invest in. A good place to start would be international trackers such as Vanguard 100 or legal and general international. If you want to decrease the risk you could look at multi asset funds which include various percentages of stocks to bonds such as Vanguard 80 or 60 or the HSBC range such as global strategy dynamic or balanced.
  • Thanks for your advice so far. - it is very much appreciated.
to add further details, I am 59, self employed and part-time employed and have a work based pension. I am prepared to lock the money away for up to 5 years at a moderate risk.

Had you considered increasing your contribution to your pension?

No, I don't want to do that. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Stocks and shares are generally said to be aimed at an investing period of 5-10 years. At 5 years you're just on the bottom cusp of that. Are you certain that you want to invest in the stock market?

That is probably a bit short-term for investments.  Fortunately, you can lock it up in cash at the moment and get a reasonable interest rate.

Maybe part of it. Probably not the whole amount.

You might as well invest that part in your pension and get the tax relief as an added bonus.
