Replacing an Insinkerator Food Waste Disposer

Does anyone have any experience of changing out a Inksinkerator?

We have an older unit (Model 55) which has run well for many years but has now packed in and needs replaced. Insinkerator have recommended a Model 66 as the replacement which I can pick up easily from my local Screwfix, however as a DIY novice, I'm not sure if replacing it would be beyond me. Any thoughts? Apparently their the same dimensions so fitting underneath the sink should be straight forward however I notice the 66 has an air switch which goes into the worktop, whereas ours has a fused switch on the wall. Could the 66 operate off that existing switch or would I need to install the air switch?

Can you not google the company that makes them and ask them ,even the new type switch will only need a hole drilled in the worktop.

If you read the instructions it says how to disable the air button if you prefer to use a wall switch
  • They’re relatively easy to fit if not a bit awkward. The unit is a little heavy so may be easier if you have somebody to help you. Definitely DIYable though.

If you don’t want to use the air switch then you can just connect it, leave it in the on position and wrap it up in the cupboard below. You can then continue to use the fused spur to switch on / off.
  • Question - In this day and age should we be shredding food waste and washing it into the sewers to feed the rats? Isn't that part of the reason why councils across the country are rolling out food-waste bins for collection this stuff, so it can be turned into compost. I removed a temperamental waste disposal unit and fitted a plastic waste system, putting my food waste in the "nasty waste" until the council issued the food-waste bin.

Our food waste has to go into the general waste bin, so it will invariably end up feeding rats at the land fill site instead.

I can’t imagine the waste that I shred will end up sitting in the sewer for long enough to cause a problem. Other “solid” waste in there washes away good enough.

Regardless, I can’t stand the smell of decomposing food emanating from my waste bin. I’ll continue using the Insinkerstor thank you very much.
