Hi there,
This might be a very quick thing - it might be more convaluted...

So my wife and I have joint bank accounts and we have credit cards linked to the same account (I'm the main account holder and my wife has the secondary card issued in her name - but only I can access online with my bank the status of the credit card account (i.e. know at any one point during the month the current spending, pending etc etc) and this is basically a rubbish way of us both being able to make sure or ensure that we are living to our budget.

The old way of having a pot of money each month and when its spent is spend is not possible or practical - because things are purchased online - or shops are cashless, parking is cashless etc etc..

So, can anyone recommend a credit card/banking company that we can have a joint account - with credit cards that both of us can assess online the status of these accounts???

Thanks in advance.

Do you have joint credit cards, or do you have a credit card with a secondary cardholder? I am not aware of any joint credit cards, though I am happy to be corrected. I am not sure if any allow the secondary cardholder to access the account though, someone else may be able to offer advice on that.

Yes - its credit card (main holder me) with a secondary card holder (my wife)
I'm hoping that there is some sort of banking that allows access for this - is there such a thing?
I've edited the orginal post to make it clearer as well.

I don't know about account visibility but the UK doesn't do joint credit cards in that sense. If you search this forum I am sure this has been asked before with both having app access to view their own spending but I can't remember if secondary would ever be able to see primary. It might be better to use current account for anything where you don't need the CC if you want these sort of views

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

There are no joint credit card in the UK, never managed to find out why, been told "its against the law" but then said person couldn't way what law it is. We do have other forms of joint credit so it's weird.

In the US joint cards do exist but by all accounts they are very unpopular and represent a small percentage, most being like ours with a single account holder and secondary cardholders.

AmEx is the closest that exists to what you want however the secondary cardholders can only see their own spending via their log ins and not the total, the account holder obviously sees everything.

When I've raised this with Barclays they've just said to share log in details but 1) its against the terms and 2) now with 2FA its painful having to tell the other person the code etc.

I've wondered if you put a third party mandate on the account if they get their own log in to it but there is no obligation for banks to offer third party mandates on credit cards etc.

do you both have smart phones

all you have to do is to get a card which allows a secondary card holder and then both of you install the app then both of you can see the balance

As you presumably live together, log on to the account for your wife whenever she wants to look at it.

Does she ever want or need to check it when you are not at home together?
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Guessing you mean the OP lets his/her wife use their log in?

The probably is 1) account sharing is often against the terms of the agreement and so in theory could mean the card is cancelled and debt called in and 2) many banking apps only allow a log in to be used on one device at a time so would need to reregister each time the other wanted access and for the wife that may mean getting the OP to do a video etc.

One could use the app and the other could use web access but then you get into the 2FA issue that the OP will receive the prompt to authorise the log in and may not be near their phone at the time or in a work meeting etc. Plus there is a clear risk that the random popup isn't their wife trying to access it but a fraudster who they then approve access to.
