This is just a bit of a rant to be honest
My wife as been a qualified nurse for 34 years and always been in work in the nursing home sector (NHS made her redundant shortly after qualifying by shutting down the hospital) she works in nursing homes usually on the bank, the few places she’s on the books for she’s not been getting any work, so now applying for jobs in other homes, and there are only a few in our town, ( all changed from nursing to care home ) it’s now turns out she’s unemployable as she now needs photo ID to apply for jobs. She can’t drive, so no driving license, and also no passport, so basically she’s screwed, on a different note she also can’t even vote without photo ID.  Life has got so frustrating and a lot harder for us older generation.( mid 50s)
Then get a passport. It'll open a lot of doors much more easily, so is money well spent even if she isn't going to travel abroad.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • A photo authority certificate is available for voting only.  A Citizencard is available for everything else (and suitable for voting). A simple google will show you how to obtain.

How does your wife intend passing a CRB check without photo ID?

To be honest, someone incapable or unwilling to obtain a photo ID is unemployable imo.

It's the most basic of requirements, an inability to produce would be a massive red flag for me as an employer and would effectively stop a job application.

I know you're having a rant but a little effort and positivity go a long way....
A CRB does not require a photo ID as she has just had a new one done
You're right, I've just read the DBS blurb. I've never made an application that way as I don't employ without photo ID.

It feels like this is not news and there may be something else going on. Is the refusal to get ID "on principle"? Because principles can be expensive to hold on to.
...and sometimes rather pointless. Saying someone is 'screwed' when a remedy is readily available (albeit at a cost which is going to be quite steep, particularly for anyone on a lowish income) seems a bit like ensuring you are the agent of your own downfall.

Sorry but this is a problem of her own making!

If she has no other photo ID then a voter ID card can be obtained for free from her local authority.

As others have suggested a passport would be a sound investment, even if she has no intention of travelling. It would cost about £8 a year (£82.50 for ten years) and would save a whole load of problems.

She will need a new DBS for a new job because they’re not portable between employers. Photo ID is not necessary to get a DBS  - there are alternatives- but she  would probably save a lot of hassle if she just got a provisional driving license or a passport .
DBS checks are portable in theory, and that was supposed to be one of the improvements over the old CRB. Unfortunately some employers and organisations strictly accept their own only, and some others only if they're very recent. If you get a DBS, then at the time you can get the DBS update service which allows additional organisations access. It'll be a paid subscription for employment DBS checks but is free for volunteer DBS.

An employer has to take reasonable steps to confirm that a prospective employee has a right to work in the UK and that any DBS requirements are met. They can be subject to significant legal penalties if they don't. How far beyond the minimum they go is entirely up to them.

So, only "portable" if the employer so chooses.

You are right but in practice myself and colleagues are finding that employers are still wanting a new certificate. I'm with the update service but still had to jump through all the hoops.
