This is just a bit of a rant to be honest
My wife as been a qualified nurse for 34 years and always been in work in the nursing home sector (NHS made her redundant shortly after qualifying by shutting down the hospital) she works in nursing homes usually on the bank, the few places she’s on the books for she’s not been getting any work, so now applying for jobs in other homes, and there are only a few in our town, ( all changed from nursing to care home ) it’s now turns out she’s unemployable as she now needs photo ID to apply for jobs. She can’t drive, so no driving license, and also no passport, so basically she’s screwed, on a different note she also can’t even vote without photo ID. Life has got so frustrating and a lot harder for us older generation.( mid 50s)

She can use a provisional licence and it isn't impossible to get a passport.

She could get a provisional licence. It's not about being in the older generation. It's about staying current and ID checks have been round a long time.
I wouldn't want a carer who couldn't show photo ID of themselves alongside dbs etc of course
Others will advise but I'm sure you can get photo ID which is neither of the above.
I'm surprised she got on the new bank books without it9 -

Mid 50s is not the older generation.
You make it sound like all of us in Gen X don't understand these new fangled passports and are something that bemuses us.
We grew up with needing to show ID!5 -
A photo authority certificate is available for voting only. A Citizencard is available for everything else (and suitable for voting). A simple google will show you how to obtain.
How does your wife intend passing a CRB check without photo ID?
To be honest, someone incapable or unwilling to obtain a photo ID is unemployable imo.
It's the most basic of requirements, an inability to produce would be a massive red flag for me as an employer and would effectively stop a job application.
I know you're having a rant but a little effort and positivity go a long way....2 -
I think you will find that whichever sector your wife wants to work in her new employer has to satisfy themselves she is who she says she is and has permission to work in the uk. Why can’t she get a passport? It will save her problems later if she wants a job.3

I’m surprised she can’t find work because the nursing homes that I go to seem to be running off agency nurses. She will need a new DBS for a new job because they’re not portable between employers. Photo ID is not necessary to get a DBS - there are alternatives- but she would probably save a lot of hassle if she just got a provisional driving license or a passport .Again, it’s not a legal requirement to have photo ID for proof of who you are for a job, but companies are going to go the easiest route for them. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1
