    Could someone related or a mate in the UK have bought insurance for the poster even after he /she had started their journey?

    No, the requirement for standard insurance is that you buy it before you leave the UK... it's like betting on a race after its already started. 

    There are specialist policies that cover people that are already travelling. 
  • If this was a work trip then surely your employer should have covered any medical & travel insurance requirements?

    Not small print though. It's a fundamental element of any type of insurance. For the simple reason if it wasn't written in there'd be widespread abuse and fraud. The doctrine of utmost good faith.
