Considering transfer from AJ Bell to ii and have been exploring their site. The search facility seems to be just a single field that delivers a limited, and non filtered list that you have to keep clicking 'show more' to expand by 3 at a time. Am I missing something or is ii search facility really that basic?

Looks like it!  I have an ii SIPP but I do all my research outside the ii Web Site and so have never really used their search facility.  If you know in advance exactly what you want, then the search will work!

Once you sign up with ii, you'll get access to a screener - see screenshot below.

I just checked when I'm logged in to my ii account.  If you're logged on you get access to the Morningstar screener as a search facility.
