Plastering

Plastering is one of those skills that does take a while to get right. For the diyer it's moving into the realm of "get a professional in". I can plaster, plumb, housewire, repair appliances, lay bricks and fix/service cars but the first question I always ask before starting a job is....In order to do the job to the standard that I would be happy with and that a potential buyer would be happy with, how long will it take me. My hourly wage works out at around £60 - £90 depending on bonuses. So if I can do the job to the same standard (or acceptable standard) myself 10% or more cheaper then I will do. Otherwise I'll get somepne else in. I've seen too many DIY jobs that have look so amateurish especially plastering and rendering.0

I live in Leeds and have renovated numerous properties in the area. I have used the same plasterer for each job as he has always done excellent work at very good prices. He turns up first thing in the morning and stays late, unlike some plasteres ive used who start the job at 10am, leave at 3pm, then charge for a full day.
The guy is called Chris and his mobile number is **********
He comes highly recommended!
***Board guide note: It is not advisable to post personal details on the boards. Please pm LPS if you wish to contact the plasterer he is recommending***0 -
I'm in my third year of studying plastering, done 2 years part-time and have just started a third year full-time. I'm 40 next year and have always done diy, will attempt most things except gas, tampering with the electric meter and up until a couple of years ago - plastering. The problem for DIYers, is - we live with our work, if there's any faults - its the first thing you notice as you walk in the room - every time you walk in the room. You have your excuses ready for visitors, who had'nt noticed till you pointed it out. I would reccomend a part-time college course FAVE/OCNW in basic plastering, mine was approx £150 about 2 years ago. Go with an established college offering an established qualification - not £800 for 3 days training getting the Golden Trowel Award. My other bits of advice are - if the wall is fairly sound - a bit of filler, sanding and lining paper and Artex does steam off - it certainly is'nt a novice re-skimming job.0

im a plasterer and it is hard work a good skimmer should be able to put on 100 sq meters a day this is inc ceilings £4 per meter is a fair price good to see people giving others achance his speed should pick up with confeidenceand so long as you are happy and can trust him thats al that maters
- wall 2.6 x 3 = 7.8
- wall 2.6 x 4 = 10.4
- wall 2.6 x 3 = 7.8
- wall 2.6 x 4 = 10.4
- Ceiling 3x4=12
Yet he still reckons he can fit another 48 sqare meters in?Just short of a another average size room.
So in 4 hrs so he claims to plaster a full room. At £4 x 52=£208 including materials?
And that is including applying pva, scraping debris from walls and ceiling, beading up, and pacthing up, sheeting up and cleaning up, and of course applying 2 coats?0 -
Why drag a three and a half year old thread up?0

Hi I am from the Fylde cost and have cracked walls which are springy in some places and sound hollow in others its a 3.6 x 3.1 m ish and will probably need the old plaster ripped out new plaster board put on and the celing re done because they will have to remove the coving which will rip off the celing wallpaper (not such a big loss!). How much should be looking to pay for this?
Thanks!0 -
1 only do plastering, london area. prices for a standard room 3x4 m and standard height roughly 350-400 , though my problem is trying to explain my clients that
1- this is an all inclusive price
2- i run a bussiness and got expenses
3 - job is done and i want the money /cheque or cash in the end of the job.
but quite of them when i say'' his house will cost 2800.00 and from start to finish will be done in 4 days'' they bring out thier calculators to find out what the day rate is .!
Its not enough that i am asking for no money upfront and that i m offering 1 year workmanship guarantee and also a written quote.!!
they just forget that in the end of any building work they have done the pople wont see the plumbing, electrics, chasing etc.. they will either swear or praise the plastering work- or the finishing work .
4 hours to do the room is a bit over the top..
i could skim a room if i was working in building site, walk inwith my boots, all materials there, mix and start.
in private houses you need 30 mins at least to cover the floors and that if the owners have removed furniture
you need to treat it with unibond or any other stuff plasterers use, and let it dry for a bit then is a 2 and half to 3 hours for the plastering process, and then the time to remove stuff, clean up .
and all the above not mentioning anything unexpected which is very comon in plastering bussiness
Good plasterers make way for anything that may happen and it takes years to know things .. its not just troweling . thats why you cant learn plastering on internet like do with plumbing etc0 -
I love reading these reply's and don't think I have laughed so much in ages; please please keep posting; the work you lot generate for me and my fellow professionals is always welcome, the funny thing is thou that I have yet to meet one of you because it always seems to be a friend of the family that has totally made such a mess of a ceiling; wall etc with Polycell / Multi finish or the latest one coat wonder. Best tip you will get today: when it comes to plastering get a proffessional in0
