Eon Next bereavement

I am sure this has come up before but I would be grateful for up to date advice. My partner is dealing with a recently deceased person's affairs. He died without a will and left only enough to cover funeral costs. Everyone, bank, mobile provider, Thames Water etc have been helpful handing over refunds without need for probate or letters of administration. Except Eon Next bereavement who are insisting that she obtain letters of admin costing £175 before they will refund small balance of about £200. So far they have been adamant. Anyone else overcome this problem please?

Are you sure there is a fee?
I think there may be no fee.
Can they insist - yes they can insist your partner proves they are authorised to deal with it I'm afraid.0 -
I think if you apply yourself you don't have to pay - if you get a solicitor or firm to do it for you then they will charge.

Don't get a solicitor involved. They will just slow things down and cost lots of money.
Do it yourself.0 -
I think the salient bit of information is the value of the estate - over £5,000 the application fee is £273 - but if the estate is valued at under £5,000, then there is no fee to pay. If you want additional copies of the letter/grant, then they're £1.50 each.0
