A basic bank account would seem the best option. Although you may need to explain why yiu need a basic account and not s normal one.

The big plus is no unauthorized overdraft or fees for tryin to get one (bounced direct debits). You also get a proper debut and ATM card fir free

My Barclays account declined stuff when there was insufficient money in when I forgot to move it from the saver

My NatWest does allow DD etc to put me in - but sends me a message to put funds in by 3pm to avoid having a fee charged

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I second Chase. In my experience it's very hot on not allowing you to go overdrawn.
  • You could try a basic bank account (like Co-operative Cashminder or Metro Bank Cash Account) which is freely available to all. These will not allow overdrafts and will decline if you attempt to go over the balance. Just make sure to tell him to regularly monitor the app to view what he is spending.

Alternatively, a prepaid card could be a good option. These have no ability at all to go overdrawn, but again requires monitoring.

Most standard current accounts will allow unarranged overdrafts, so are not a good idea. The only one I know of which knowingly doesn’t is Nationwide, but they still can’t 100% guarantee.
