I have read the threads on MSE for wireless help but, I cannot seem to crack the problems so here goes..
Have a Dell PC connected to a Netgear 834GT router, no problems here. I did previously have a laptop working fine wireless with this router, then I was given an older Sony Vaio which I thought would be a simple job to set up. I have tried so many things but cannot connect to the internet, have managed to get the wireless showing as connected, then reading the threads today I was playing about with the settings in the properties and, more specifically in the TCP/IP area. I selected the option to obtain IP and DNS automatically, as there were IP details in there before now they have gone, my wireless connection showing limited. Hopefully this should be easy enough to get me back connected, but where do I start with trying to get to the internet. Have tried PING entries to router 192.168.0.1 but these come back with very little.
Hopefully someone can help me out?????
Thanks

does wireless say connected or limited? If limited, you aren't connected to the router, so probably need to enter the encryption key and type into the pcEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Using your dell, go to the Netgear router interface, and make sure that DHCP is enabled. Next, if you are running Xp disable the Wireless Zero Configuration, follow the instructions here and then try to connect to the router0

Thanks for the response so far. In Netgear settings DHCP is on, I have followed the link to stop the wireless zero config but, now cannot see any wireless network in the list!0

Turn wzc on again, as you have discovered, that is the service that manages the wireless in 99% of the pc's out there.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

OMG...it has just started to work, whilst logged into the Netgear admin site, I noticed that it was giving DNS addresses, also changed the security to WPA and, it flashes up connected and the bloomin intert works too.
Off for a drink now I'm knackered!!
Happy Holidays all:j0 -
Solved my problem by visiting this site (on my PC): http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showthread&threadid=283827&forumid=18
I followed a link and info "click here" posted by ask4help dated wed 20/06/07 under configure router.
A screen appears which includes the heading WEP Security Encryption. It's here that i changed "authentication type" to read "open system", I then noted numbers and letters ( 26 in total) in key "1" as they appeared.
Back to my daughter's laptop (VISTA) and connection to network. Right click the chosen network - select properties - select security...- copy the "key" into the box marked "network security key" - leave the "security type" as "no authentication (open)" and the "key index as "1".
Everything so far, is going well.... I hope this may help.0
