When to notify utilities etc of moving

Hi All

We are due to complete a week on Friday (23rd) and ideally want to start notifying people that we are moving like utilities and broadband etc but contracts although signed are not yet exchanged.

I'm waiting to hear back from the solicitor as to when we will be exchanging but what are everyone else's thoughts on this? Are we safe enough to start notifying or do we wait? We don't want to run down the clock too much on it.

  • Once exchange has taken place. Before that is risky.

Don’t notify before exchange as that’s when you’ll have firm completion date. If you notify say phone & broadband before then, you risk current provider cutting your vendor off. Not a good idea.
For gas & electricity you’ll have a deemed contract with the existing supplier. You’ll need to submit closing readings for your current home & opening readings for new home in moving day. Its a good idea to take photos.
  • Completely agree with you both and thankfully have just heard we are exchanging today or tomorrow and then get cracking.

Good tip about photographing the meters!

Definitely photograph the meters - remember water meters too if either property has those!

If your current energy supply is by any chance with Octopus then you might find their "Move home with us" scheme is very helpful - it worked seamlessly for us, albeit I still adopted the belt & braces approach of ensuring that we took all readings in the usual way, and of course we still had to notify our closing reading on the old property.

Don't forget to get your buildings insurance sorted as soon as you are notified that exchange has happened, if that is applicable to you!

  • Don’t worry about it too much - it’s not critical to do it on exchange. I would wait until you’ve completed and have the new readings for when you actually complete. That way you don’t need to duplicate anny calls etc.

  • For clarity - photographing the meters should be done as you leave the old property (set a reminder on a phone for first thing on completion day) and as soon as you walk into the new one, NOT at exchange!
