RBS bank joint account name not recognised online

Just opened a new RBS account in joint names of wife and myself.  The only way this can be done with RBS is to open account in my name (Smith C - fictional for this thread) and then add wife (Brown - using her own surname, not married name).  Account is opened with name Smith C.  We add wife and eventually RBS confirms change made and on the app the account is indeed “Smith C & Brown”.  However, when we try to make a transfer in, other banks when doing the payee check do not recognise “Smith C & Brown”, and say instead the match is for “Brown C”.

This is (a) annoying and (b) potentially problematic as banks may suspect fraud if we constantly override, and also may pose problems with payments out to our other joint accounts if names don’t match.

RBS have said “nothing to do with us, must be the other bank”.  But all the other banks we’ve tried come up with the same issue when trying to confirm the RBS details.  It’s been going on now for some time.

Has anyone else experienced this or similar and if so, is there a way to get RBS to fix it?

Many thanks.

I agree it's annoying but, in my experience with joint accounts CoP never actually matches the account name. We just live with it for our accounts.

I'm not sure there's any evidence that "banks may suspect fraud if we constantly override". The over-ride is at your risk, not theirs. And I don't know that they actually keep records of how often it's done. Others may know more, but I don't think that's likely to be a problem.
  • That may be right, but increasingly we are finding that savings accounts need to have a nominated account linked with matching names, and while in the past this didn’t seems to be rigorously enforced it now is and we are getting queries and online rejections.
  • I think that for the purposes of Confirmation of Payee then you simply need Firstname Lastname of either joint account holder. Same should be true for nominated accounts.

The descriptive name of the account that you see in app/online/statements is not used.
  • We’ve definitely had applications rejected when the two don’t tally, and CoP is definitely not recognising the rbs account.

My account with Santander has always been a joint account but has always shown up as just my name when people go to pay into it, this has never caused any problems.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • When paying into our joint accounts, either name will do, but not both.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

I override COP most times unless a purely business account as having 10 payees with the same name is of no use.  Never had any problems with payments being denied.

How were applications (presumably for savings accounts) rejected and with which banks?
