Wireless networking help (so confused...)

We have a new Dell PC in our bedroom connected to a virgin Media broadband modem. We then put our old Dell PC in my sons bedroom.

We want our son to have internet access in his bedroom. What do we need?

Our new PC does not have a Wirefree Network card in it as standard. Stupid fools that we were we never added it when we purchased it. Dell are the only suppliers around that dont add them as standard nowadays!!! Typical!!!

Do we need a card in our PC as it is set up straight to the modem??

We are very confused!!! I know it is probably very easy but to us its like rocket science!!!

Thanks in advance

something like http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=335911 should do, your modem and computer both plug into the router and use the usb adaptor on the other computer to connect wirelessly to the router.

thank you for your really quick response.

We have 20 meg broadband. Will the router you linked to slow this down?

    Thanks again

it should still run at the same speed.
  • Not sure that kit would work with Cable BB, it looks suspiciously like an ADSL router, also how far apart is the PC from your son's room

ADSL routers have the modem built in, the router i linked to doesn't have any modem built in, you use your existing cable modem with it.

We have virgin broadband and our sons laptop didn't have a wireless card. The router we bought was a netgear 40.00 from john lewis, it comes with what looks like a flash drive usb thingy (dongle)?? goes into son usb port on laptop and he is wireless. Neither myself or DH very techie but they told us that it was plug and play!!! Definately not fortunately a friends husband works in IT and managed to connect it all up but it took him 2 hours we would never of had it working. It works well most of the time but all the computers are downstairs and we have no solid interior walls. We were told that this is sometimes an issue. Good luck with setting it up if you know someone who is a techie ask them it will be much easier.

yes i'll agree you need a tekkie to set it up. i set my sisters wireless netwrk up in minutes but my TP-Link router was so hard to make sense, i hate it xYou'll need a tekkkie friend to set up security though.
