Is it possible.........?

To pay a credit card bill by standing order? I know i can do it online, or by phone but i would prefer to pay it by standing order.

  • SO - not sure
DD - definately, this is what I do with Egg. Ask the CC company to set one up, you have to specify you want to pay either the full amount, minimum payment or some random same amount each month.

I don't see any reasons preventing you from doing this (I prefer DD though).
SO has the same attributes as DD: Sort Code, Account Number, Reference. If you already have DD you can look into it for these detailes. When paying to CC company card number is usually used as a reference.

Ideally i should pay it by direct debit but i dont really want to, ive tried getting through to the customer service desk but i got lost in a sea of options. I tried the 'pay a bill' facility with my internet bank, but when i tried to set it up - i couldnt put the bank details of the company i needed. I had to type the name of the company i want to pay but then it bought down a drop down menu with only one option which bought up a name i didnt recognise on my statement. I wasnt going to chance it. So then i tried registering on the companies website and got stuck on the user id. I put in the one i normally use, but it wouldnt recognise it.

If i go into the standing order option in my bank online i can put the bank details in as i wanted to do in the first place. It just means i need to do a little alteration every month to pay the bill off in full - but i can live with that!

I don't understand this. To set up a SO you need the same detailes (of CC company) as to make one-off payment from your bank account: Sort Code, Account Number. SO is the same payment, but regular.

When setting up a SO you usually have the other option than to 'type the name of the company'. This other option is to set Sort Code and Account Number manually (if you know them).

Can I ask what bank you're with?

Natwest online system is great - go to pay a bill section, then choose the new payee option. You're then asked to choose what type of bill you want to pay (so in this case it would visa or mastercard) and then you choose the card company and brand (eg rbs, mint). You may then have different options depending on whether mint does different types of card such as platinum, normal and the first 4 digits are the different.

    LLoyds is similar.

In both cases you only need to add your reference details as I guess the sort code/bank details are preset by the banks.
