I wanna panasonic th42px70 TV

  • chuckles1066, please explain why?

I ordered a 42" Panasonic plasma from them on 26th November, together with one of their EDExtra cards which, for £19.99, qualified me for a 5 year warranty on the tv.

So, for just under a grand, I was happy. I placed the order and got a prompt automated email by return informing me of what I'd purchased.

They debited my credit card with the full value of the order right away.

Erm.....ok, I wasn't entirely happy with that but the deal was a good one so I thought I'd let it ride.

To cut a long story short, they ignored 5 emails and a Recorded Delivery letter to their Customer Services Director (always a bad sign).

I rang them on 21st December on their highly expensive 0870 number.......I sat in a queue for 14 minutes being repeatedly told that my call was important to them before being told "oh we haven't had any of those in stock for 6 weeks and we don't know when the next delivery is due".

They've had almost a grand of my money for a month; I cancelled the order but I suspect it will take a FLBA before they get around to refunding it.

For what it's worth, I spoke to the relevant Trading Standards Office about them and the girl at the other end let out an audible sigh when I mentioned their name.

You can only speak as you find and........they're pond life.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.
  • The reason I point out the price from empire is that in Bolton they have 2 stores, which makes them a bricks and mortar company which is what everyone looks for when it comes to price matching. John Lewis for one, stores in the Bolton area will beat any local prices by matching and then giving 10% of the difference off on top.

I want a Phillips LCD tv and basically everywhere it is £449, which i thought was rather reasonable. then i just found it for £399 on empire direct- there is not a store near me so will currys be willing to price match, the nearest store is in manc and which is about 40 miles so not a million miles away. but do they look for it to be closer I saw in store today at both currys and comet the price match thing.

But I am off to Rotherham next week and I can go through Derby and there is a empire direct and currys on the same retail park so would they do the price match there? would it be best to wait till then?

is it also the instore price - how do you know that is the same as online?

    sorry about all the questions.

I don't know about them price matching none local stores but you can ask they could just say no but John Lewis will match any bricks and mortar store not even local ones. 40 miles isnt that far anyway so I would think that they would match tell them you work in Manchester so going to the shop isnt an issue you do it twice daily ;)

Empire always have the same prices instore as on their website. occasionally they don't update he store prices but when you pay you get charged the website price without even having to ask for it. If you want tell me the make and model I will go to the local ED store and take a photo of the shelf edge label for you.
  • It's this model.

    Philips 32PFL5522D

That would be great if you could take a photo - do johnlewis also match it and take 10% off.

the nearest johnlewis to me is in manchester as well - and is only about 5miles or so away from the ED - but to be honest my whole family work in manc so one of them could pick it up for me. plus JL do the whole 5 year guarentee on tvs so it would be great to get it from there.
  • John Lewis just price match, the last time I used the price match I had to pay the full price and provide the details of where it was cheaper they looked in to it then refunded me the difference.

I will sort that photo out for you

I called in to empire and they didnt have one on display and they couldnt find it in their system, are you sure on the model number?

They only had a 37" version of it.
  • JL will duck, dive and wriggle as much as they can to avoid price matching. I have been trying to get my local (Reading) store to price match on a Panasonic tv that they priced at £699. JL in Glasgow have been selling them for £599 (but sold out Saturday pm) but Reading wouldn't price match within their own company! Richer Sounds (1/2 mile away) had them in stock, at £599, and one in their demo room but because it wasn't on display in the shop, JL wouldn't budge. They also said they had to take their free warranty into consideration as well, so at that rate they are never going to price match any one. It appears to be a big con!

  • I've waited 10 days for JL Kingston to price match a Panasonic plasma and they still haven't got back to me despite a reminder call. JL Reading are also giving me the runaround as well. I think their price match offer isn't all it is cracked up to be.
