And, each time, choose the relevant bank account for the withdrawal.
I personally skip this step and just use the credit whenever I next use Paypal. It's typically only £2 a month so doing so costs me 2p in terms of lost Nectar points.

Not sure which step you're skipping. I was referring to the withdrawals from the banks to paypal by DD - which are surely not skippable steps otherwise the whole arrangement is pointless.

Misread - I thought you were adding a final step where you deposit the funds back in to your bank account. More coffee needed.
  • Standing orders are not direct debits. Any request for money needs to come from PayPal for the DD to activate and as far as I know PayPal doesn't offer the ability to schedule this.

Otherwise everything else will work in the manner which you have described.

I understand where the disconnect is now... I thought that any money transferred into PayPal from the bank accounts will be via direct debit regardless of how its done, but in actual fact it will only be a DD if (manually) "withdrawn" from PayPal vs sent via the bank account.

Thanks all for helping a newbie out!

  • Although separate but related question... can I confirm if 2 (different) PP DDs will work on the same bank account - where the DDs will come from 2 different PP accounts (mine and my OH)
  • I believe you’ll usually need to transact on the direct debits before they will count, but always best to check specific offer terms & conditions.

That’s if you can get the bank accounts to link. Tried on a Starling Bank and NatWest account, both failed! Neither the banks or PayPal can figure out why, so had to link manually without a Direct Debit.
