"Intermediate rate (Scottish) or higher rate payers could be due a tax reduction when making relief at source contributions."

Do any intermediate rate scottish tax payers claim the 1% if relief at source is only giving 20%. If not doing a self assessment how is this done?

I'm sure some must do.  It's covered on gov.uk.

Yes. Although in my case I've always done SA returns. The calculation specifically says "Your pension payments of £xxxx.00 have increased your Scottish basic rate limit." Further confirmed for 22/23 where the calculation show nothing charged at 21%.  (Previous years my contributions kept me out of Higher Rate, but i was paying some Intermediate)

Interesting thank you. I knew higher rate tax could be reclaimed through self assessment but i hadn't realised the scottish intermediate 21% rate meant 1% was claimable.
  • Hello.

I just wanted to come back to explain my confusion.  Confusion was caused by a lack of clear information at my workplace about how the pension scheme works.

I now realise that I am able to make AVCs through salary sacrifice - I can adjust this amount as required either as a fixed amount, or a percent of my monthly pay, and in my case I was wanting to increase it, to offset the hit from higher tax that we're paying in Scotland now.  I hadn't realised the AVCs went through before tax as Salary Sacrifice, but I understand now!  So I don't need to worry about doing anything else.

Thanks for everyone's help and comments.
