Solar Panel - Exported Energy

I am moving to new property with solar panels (4kw) and heat pump.  Who would be the best energy provider for paying for exported electricity?

Whoever you decide to go with, remember that you must first register with the company that is currently supplying the new property, then start a switch.
    Barnsley, South Yorkshire
    Solar PV 5.25kWp SW facing (14 x 375) installed Mar 22
Lux 3.6kw hybrid inverter and 9.6kw Pylontech batteries
Daikin 8kW ASHP installed Jan 25
    Octopus Cosy/Fixed Outgoing
  • Hi, if the property is new to you as opposed to new build worth establishing the age of the panels as there my be FIT payments you will benefit from. Regardless of the age, you'll need paperwork such as the MCS certificate to get export payments so best get your solicitor to handle that as part of the conveyancing process if you are buying the property. With regards to the supplier, Octopus was best for me by some margin but best to shop around.

  • It's worth remembering that some suppliers will pay you a better export rate if you also buy energy from them.

Obviously make sure that the solar panels are owned by the vendor and not some third party under a 'rent-a-roof' scheme; and that full ownership will be transferred to you. You will also need the MCS certificate and DNO approval to register for export payments. Depending on the age there might be FIT payments but it's always possible to get separate metered export payments however you would then need a working smart meter. Definitely ask all these questions...
  • I pay for gas, electricity and broadband through Utility Warehouse, but they only offer 2p/kw. I don't want to change this supplier, What is the best rate I could get from another source?

There's a list here Smart Export Guarantee rates: the best and worst SEG tariffs for solar panel owners - Which? News but you need to check carefully as some have strings attached.
