I’m currently going through a mutual exchange and was wondering when to update my address with my car insurers

would I be allowed to update my insurance on the same day as moving or would this been seen as a breach of policy? Thanks

Update your address when you have moved, Insurance, driving licence, V5 amongst many others.

You have not changed address until you have actually moved

Any exchange is not relevant. They will only be interested about the date the car physically moves.

I wouldn't update anything until you actually move. You don't need to give advance notice, on the day is fine.

You can do it on the day or a month before, it's really up to you. If you do it in advance and then the move doesn't happen most will allow you to cancel the change without a cost.

The only thing to consider is if the price change could possibly influence your choice to move or not? A friend with one of the ill fated Range Rovers found their insurance went up by £6,000 a year when moving to central London this year. If you're moving no matter the insurance impact then do it when you want. If a £6k increase would make you think twice or maybe switch the car before the move then do it earlier.

I definitely have to move either way and my car insurance looks like it will increase by about £500 at least based on quotes from comparison sites

I can’t see my current insurers on comparison sites with my new address, does that mean they won’t be able to insure me when I move?

Phone them and ask, no one can second guess for you.

Just say "I am thinking of moving to X address around Y date, what would be the impact on my insurance". You don't have to commit to a change there and then. Just tell them you will be in touch when you have certainty ove the date.

Potentially... and even if you did see them if they are an intermediary it doesn't mean your underwriter is happy, you are locked to both for the policy year. It's not certain though, they may be close to new business in the area but happy to take existing customers. Only way to tell is to speak to them, you'll benefit for the earlier notification if their answer is no and you have to shop around.

When getting renewal quotes through comparison sites recently I noticed that my current insurer wasn't coming up in the results, but they sent me a renewal and certainly could insure me. I put it down the the fact that I already have a policy with them and therefore they wouldn't show up in comparison sites.
