Universal credit phone call

Hi I recently had a phone call with universal credit as they wanted to look into 3 months of my bank statements. In them 3 months I sold a gold chain and bracelet I owned for £3400..

the person on the phone said it could be classed as extra income? But he also said it was a bit of a grey area i am currently waiting to here back

where do I stand? surely I should be able to sell my personal items for like jewellery without having to tell universal credit? As long as I’m over the £6k savings limit?

You are correct, the UC call handler(as usual) is not correct.
(Assuming you are not trading regularly in jewellery !!! ).

"As long as I’m over the £6k savings limit"  - You mean under ?

  • Yes sorry under the 6k savings limit..

it was just a one off private sale to another person it’s not like I’m getting it every month (I wish)..

I did try to look online to see if anyone had been in this situation before but couldn’t find anything..

Like Alice_Holt stated the misinformation you get from "help" lines are a regular occurrence.
It's capital and certainly not a grey area.

From the wording of the OP it was a UC Compliance Check. So a dedicated team deal with those rather than helpline staff.

But with mine they wanted to know about various payments out (bills) and one PayPal transaction out of £20- I had to explain how PP works.
No questions about the eBay money IN though!

I agree with OP's take that he is entitled to sell personal items and no need to inform unless it takes his money over £6k.

That makes it worse. How on earth can they be doing a CC when they haven't a clue of the rules.

Exactly. I was flabbergasted to have to explain to them how PayPal works. They didn't like the transaction (one in the whole statement period) of £20 because it showed as a Direct Debit!
