marriage tax allowance company

My 89 year old father had a call involving the marriage tax allowance refund yesterday. He was struggling so I told him to give them my number. It was the Tax Refund Team (01254 791 674).
I have just realized they were not the HMRC and I'm kicking myself for not spotting this.
They had both my parents National security numbers, no idea how they got these and I digitally signed a form for my parents and they are going to send a cheque by post.
I'm really worried I might have got them scammed. I don't believe they have any of my parents bank details at this point.
Are they liable to pay the "fee" because I signed?
Many thanks.

Any refund will be sent direct to them and they will deduct their fee before forwarding the balance.

In what capacity did you sign on behalf of your parents?  Do you have POA?

Chances are that HMRC will reject any application for Marriage Allowance as he would be entitled to Married Couple's Allowance, which is worth far more from a tax saving perspective.

Might be prudent to get him to phone HMRC first thing tomorrow and get it recorded that he doesn't want this company to act on his behalf and that he hasn't signed anything authorising them to do so.

As far as a fee is concerned what does the contract say?  If one was payable and the company decided to enforce the contract presumably you would be happy to pay it for your father?

I don't think there is a contract, certainly nothing in print, they just phoned up. They said they are going to post a cheque. If it isn't cashed there won't be anything to enforce?

You realise a cheque would only be provided to your father if HMRC had sent a larger cheque to the claims company?

The one he gets would be the tax refund less whatever fee the company charges.  So by not cashing it he would have lost 100% of the refund.

Do you really mean you agreed to all this without having any idea of the fees involved or exactly what you were getting your father involved in 😳
