My online account at BG suddenly says that I am £3800 in credit. The chatbox says that this is because they have added back all the paid charges since we moved into house. No reason is given How can a utility company operate with such a flawed system?.

All utility companies have a timing gap, unless they produce bills everyday the "balance" is not correct, just based on the last posted elements.
Look at the transaction history on your online account, it is possible that they've reversed all the bills and are in the process of redoing them.
