Smart Meter Monitor Problem - British Gas

Has anyone had a problem with their monitor not pulling through their gas? Mine just stop working, spoke to British Gas( my supplier) who told me I need to contact Scottish Power who put the meter in or go to a DIY and buy a new one.  Surely there is something else I can do.

Mine hasn’t reported for years and meter not reporting the gas to British Gas  either for years now. Had three engineers out it needs some sort of chip in whatever sends the data and British Gas aren’t replacing them at the moment. I believe it is a common problem .

This is fairly standard you do not actually have any other option for an IHD other than buy one yourself. You can view your usage online, although that is not in real time, or you could use something like the Bright app to view your usage as well. The IHD in general is not that useful though so I really would not worry.
  • Thanks both. So annoying
  • I have a similar problem with my gas meter. Moved into a new home that had a smart meter set to pre-payment. Asked them to move gas and electricity to direct debit. They have done it for the electricty but not the gas. So I'm now in the position where I am paying for my electricity but not gas and this has been going on for 4 months. I've rang BG numerous times, raised complaints, saying I am not being billed or paying for the gas used. They don't seem interested in sorting it.

Go to the energy ombudsman. It's the only way to actually get any action from some companies.

Have you checked the smart meter is sending the gas data okay (is it showing on your billing and/or on this website: https://www.n3rgy.com/) - if not then buying a new in home display won't help the problem.

If it is showing up then depending on what you want the data for, the easy alternative is to download one of the monitoring apps (loop, bright or hugo).

The data isn't real time but the way gas works means real time isn't very helpful for monitoring use anyway (for example, gas central heating it's less helpful to be looking at what your boiler is using that second vs how much is used in a few hours/a day).
