What problems do you experience with property search sites like Rightmove?

None. Choosing somewhere to live requires leg work. We all have different preferences and wish lists.

I'm surprised they've never introduced filters for features such as amount of land, swimming pool, stables etc.
  • Hi everyone,

New to this forum and wondering if anyone else finds the experience of using Rightmove as a buyer really sub-par?

Their model works on estate agents paying for listings so I find the search results are always optimised for what the agent is trying to sell me vs what's right for me to buy.

I'd love to be able to look search properties based on things like cost per sq ft, the amount of renovation work that might be required, as well as more info about the local area.

What problems do you experience with property search sites like Rightmove?

The floorplan usually gives the square footage so you can work that out if it's important to you but I can't say I have ever bought on that basis or know anyone else who has either. If the property is big enough that's all that matters.

As for renovation work, well that's evident from the photos, viewings and ultimately a survey. Everyone has different criteria as well, a slightly dated kitchen for example will be fine for one person and an absolute 'must replace immediately' for someone else.

Areas? What sort of info could a site like Rightmove provide? They show things like nearest railway station but area is really down to you to research based on your personal requirements and preferences.

That's not to say Rightmove and others are perfect. I was looking for a flat with a shared freehold - there is only freehold and leasehold options and of course it depends on the agents putting in the correct information (many don't seem to even know the difference!).

I am too. I would also like filters for a helipad and staff quarters.

Price per quare metre is still only a very rough guide even in places like France  where it is quoted more often as properties vary regarding modernity etc. Zooplq offers to search via key words but EA fees would be much higher if  they had to research and in put all data OP is asking for. It is usually the most expensive purchase people will make so I am still amazed that posters on here discover worrying facts about their property and or neighbourhood after spending a fortune on deposits and fees. Time after time buyers are urged to check out crime statistics,, differences in noise at times of day, days of the week school run parking etc. Very few people appear to move across country where it might be more difficult to do research but so much is on line these days including local newspapers and tenancy group meetings minutes

There are certainly a few extra filters I'd like, but they wouldn't be the ones OP mentioned. Although, to be honest I filter more when I'm browsing purely for entertainment. Always annoys me I have to use the map filter to try and narrow down sea view properties only :D When actually looking for a house to buy, I want to be sure I don't miss anything, so just tend to look daily at the area in question and filter for everything listed in the last 24 hours. I don't live in a big city though and I can see that when you're talking about an area with lots of properties you might want to filter a bit more. Mainly though I'd rather see more properties and filter in my own head, than limit what I see and run the risk of missing out on a corker.

    Maybe that is because

If you wanted something like Right Move but optimised for buyers, you would probably have to pay to use it.

There is a "keywords" input box where you could add "pool", "stable" etc.

I would like to see total land area (in sqm, what century is this? 😁), and aspect, but that's about it.  As others have said though Rightmove is limited to the info they get from EAs so there's not much more they can do until buyers start to demand this information as standard.

I've looked at this thread with curiosity. I must admit that I never found there were too many properties to look through in order to judge things myself. I would even look at properties outside my necessary/needed specs to get an idea of the bigger market.

I'd like to ask the OP how big an area they are looking at, that more filtering is necessary.
