VAT Invoice/Receipt

I am not VAT Registered but do need an old VAT Invoice/receipt for kitchen appliances purchased for a business, (laptop died along with my invoice). I have managed to find the exact date of my purchases from Currys, (from a credit card statement),but have I phoned, used their webchat on numerous occasions. I have been told that this has been escalated, and then that the escalation has been escalated! Still nothing. I have emailed the CEO and also sent him a letter, and my only response is an email confirming receipt and then a standard email saying they will look into it. Has anyone any idea what else I can do?

  • Can you log in to webmail and download it from there?
I'm assuming that the invoice was delivered by email in the first place?

While you wait for Currys, you could consider what you mean by 'laptop died along with your invoice'?

My laptop died last October, they all die sooner or later. I bought a new one and logged on to my MicroSoft account and my Google account. Within a few hours everything was back just as before - all my folders, documents, emails, etc.
Quite independently of the laptops I could always access all my emails on my phone. A search for 'Currys' brings up all the old receipts for kettles, washing machines and so on I have bought over the years.

I use Windows/Android but the Apple walled garden works in the same way. Unless you have deliberately got rid of all your backups (not a good idea especially since you use it for business), your laptop might have died but your invoices are still out there waiting for you in the cloud.

The only time a VAT invoice / receipt must be provided is transaction between two VAT-registered entities.
Why do you need the VAT invoice if you are not VAT-registered?

How long ago was the purchase?

If you continue to get no joy from Curry's, can you consider data recovery from the old laptop harddrive?
  • Agreed with what others have said. If it was a while ago they may simply not have it. I assume you are keeping it as you are wanting to/have claimed the VAT back?

Unfortunately, and as harsh as this may sound, it is not on Curry’s to put in redundancies for if something does happen, especially with a business customer. People should be backing up important documents. Loads of cloud services, and archiving services for old documents (even electronic archiving).

Date of purchase on card statement, will not be the date of transaction. So given the number of daily transactions, they will not go trolling back through days of them, unless their system allows search by card no.
