Would this fail an MOT??

Hi, would anyone have any idea of this would fail an MOT

I was getting the car cleaned a few months back and they've messed with the sensors under the passenger seat. I get an amber message when I turn the engine on saying "front left malfunction". It doesn't stay on and there is no other hazard light.

I had it checked and was told that the sensor board under the seat needs replaced and it's about £400. I've asked around and no-one has been quite sure whether it would be ok. A few folk said if the light is not staying on it should be fine or maybe just an advisory.

It's an a class I drive. I really can't afford it at the moment so if it can be avoided and I can get it through the test for now I would be happy.

  • Are there any no pass no fee mot centres near you.
That would be the best way to find out.
From memory if lights go out and stay out it should pass.
Have you scanned the code with an OBD2 tool.
    Scan and clear code.

    7.1.6. Supplementary restraint system (SRS)

The SRS MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) should only be failed if it is indicating a system malfunction. A lamp illuminated to indicate the passenger airbag is disabled is not to be regarded as a defect.

Warning messages on dashboard displays are not a defect in their own right, but may assist the tester in determining that the warning lamp is illuminated because a malfunction exists.

Defect Category (a) An SRS malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) indicates a system malfunction     Major

So if the Seatbelt warning amber light is on it is a fail. It should pass if it is just a message that disappears.

What happens if you turn off the passenger airbag?

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Might be worth a punt....if the module hasn't actually logged a fault nor earthed to ground...disconnect the negative at the battery and leave it for a few minutes.

Reconnect and leave the ignition on for a few minutes....longer with a charger connected. I've had modules 'reboot' themselves having had a fit previously.

Sometimes (old wives tale or not?) disconnect the positive lead and touch the two leads together...allegedly discharges any residual volts etc...

    YMMV.
Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience?

Why? So you can argue with them?
  • Thanks for all your suggestions. It thankfully passed its MOT today despite the issue.

Called mercedes, they're looking for £250 for a new pad plus £300 diagnostics and fitting.

I think I'll be leaving that for now! and shall try some of your ideas to get the message cleared, so annoying seeing it every time I start the engine
