Hi. I travel a fair amount on BA in Club and have experienced both types of seats. Whilst those are indeed, older seats, they are still very comfortable and I find they are better for sleeping than Club Suite though YMMV. The one by the window is especially nice.

I don’t know what route or plane you’re on but if it’s Gatwick then it will be a 777 and they are all old Club with no plans to convert.

In any case the window seat at the rear of the cabin usually has direct aisle access so if you can swap to those two then that might be better for you? Check on https://www.aerolopa.com/ba
for the seat map. (Seatguru isn't always correct and doesn’t get updated any more).

It really is fine. You don’t generally leave your seat more than a couple of times on a flight and often the person you need to step over will not be lying down, even if they are it isn’t that difficult for most people to step over a seat. Focus on the improved food, the better screen, the space available to you etc.

At the end of the day no matter which airline you are flying there are always some compromises in Business class, even in First for most airlines.

The BA Club World are dated but you have the option of a window seat and can keep the partition between two seats down if traveling with family etc. The last iteration of Virgin Upper class was a herringbone design so there was no one with a window seat and each seat is fully isolated so only option to be together was for someone to leave their seat and sit on the foot stool but there is direct aisle access for every seat.

Yes, there were some advantages to the old style BA layout especially if travelling as a couple or family group.  The more modern designs are better for personal privacy as a solo traveller but can be too isolating for some.

Personally, lack of a window doesn't bother me especially on a transatlantic flight where there is nothing worth seeing outside.
  • If you check the seating plan there are some seats that have easy access to the aisle,no climbing over!
I always chose them, but they do go quickly
