Have a shufti here - find your reporting area and the click on the link to find the degree days for the past 36 months. The table is a bit dense but its easy to compare degree day info to see whether its been colder or warmer month by month - https://www.enmanreg.org/freedd/uk-degree-day-data/

here is the table but you need to check which region you are in from the map above before its of any use - https://vesma.com/ddd2/36month.htm

December gas consumption down 28% on Dec22, Jan up 3% on Jan23. No insulation changes.
Mine is also down 20% in January (South coast), as well as December. Consumption for prior years (2021-23) were very similar to each other.

  • 15% saving this year it's been very mild albeit for about three weeks Nov/Dec.

If we had been frugal in any way we might have saved 20-25% I suspect I mean it's even 11oC outside now.

Also south coast, those few days around the middle of Jan we were using over 70kWh per day for several days. That’s what knocked our usage up.
  • Nothing has structurally changed here (NW) but I've used a little more. I'm blaming the fact I've not been very well and have had to travel a lot for work so when I've been home I've been tired and not doing as much to stay active (so feeling the cold more).
I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.

Best wishes Arbitrary ... hope your health improves and travelling diminishes ... it's tough in the real world  :).

Only turning the central heating on for half an hour in the morning, mostly to dry off towels and underwear, against running it for an hour in morning and night last year (so double bonus as usage and unit cost both down), down on the south coast where it has been very mild during the day. Surprised as there is supposed to be a 13 year weather cycle which should mean Sibera style temperatures (as per 2010), so likely global warning is happening. Pity about all the rain, though (does keep my water butts nicely full for flushing the toilet)!

Thanks this is really useful. It shows 7% fewer degree days in the Thames Valley from September to January this winter vs. last but December was a lot colder last year.

In West London location the Degree Days for Dec & Jan in 2023/24 are 1% more than in 2022/23,  but 16% higher for the Nov, Dec & Jan periods.
