Driving Licence Renewal

Options
Hi
I need to renew my Driving Licence. My Passport had expired also so I renewed that first, got a photo taken at a local photo shop with a code to input on the passport site. it went great and only took a week.
a week or so later I've then gone to renew my driving licence under the impression they would use my passport photo. So I created a DVLA account however when going through the process of licence renewal it told me I cant renew online? No explanation, after trying many times I rang DVLA who checked my online account and said everything was okay, but could not say why I couldn't renew my licence. the only explanation I was given was "we know there's a glitch in the system try again in a few weeks or you will have to use the post office.
Well I have tried in a few weeks and still cant do it.
So I will need know to use the PO and pay the additional costs and have another photo taken with them.
I know its not a lot of money however I wonder how many others have experienced this and been forced to use the PO which for some is not convenient and incurs the additional costs.

Thanks

  • You can use online renewal if your passport is expired, as long as it hasn't been expired for over a year.

You don’t need to pay for a photo at the post office. As long as you meet the photo guidance you can ask someone to take the photo for you on your phone, and if you’ve got a home printer print it off yourself or take it somewhere to have it printed.

Not sure what other extra costs at the post office you are referring to?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

It costs £14 online and £21.50 at the Post Office ( including them taking a photo if you need one)

You can also apply by post if you are happy to sort the photo out yourself, for £17.

Hi, Elsien, you say you did yours by post as I don't fancy queuing on a Saturday to sort this out, was there a special form?
