Gas Meter blank screen unable to provide readings.

I have a Gas meter which is no longer displaying a reading. I have informed Scottish Power that the meter was not working. I was told that they never go wrong. I have now been getting estimated readings for 10 months. I have no idea how much gas i am actually using. Each month i receive a message asking me to provide a reading, which of course i cannot do. The meter is a honeywell smets2. YES I have pressed all the buttons to wake it up.
How long can SP keep sending estimated bills. Are they obliged to repair/replace the meter.

Yes. Probably best to raise a formal complaint. Another tactic that can get a quicker response is to email the chief executive.

Customer Services might have stated this, but it's not true. There are plenty of threads here with faulty gas meters.

The most common problem with SMETS2 gas meters seems to be the battery going flat. Sadly they're not user-replaceable. You'll need a replacement meter.

As long as you let them, or until they replace it. Yes they're obliged to replace it.

I would suggest that you raise a formal complaint via SP's complaints process. If they still haven't sorted things out after eight weeks, you can escalate your complaint to the Energy Ombudsman.

Have you tried an IHD?

I had the same issue - the meter display was blank but I could still get readings from my IHD

... was about to say the same thing, helped my son recently with the same issue, meter was blank but the IHD was still connecting and the meter readings were accessible on the IHD through the options menu, not the display of the use/cost.

The meter reading did not appear immediately, but leaving the IHD on the meter screen for a while allowed it to update.

The gas meter updates the gas proxy every 30 mins and that is where the IHD gets its data.

What is the age of the meter ? The battery may  lasts between 6 and 10 years .
 I suspect a smart gas meter will get through its battery quicker than a dumb gas meter battery which may rarely get touched more than a few times a year. The batteries in these meters can last 25 years .
They are one of  longer  lasting Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries  .Pity they can t just be replaced in situ 

My neighbour works for a company who sell refurbished gas meters and tells me they are getting a lot of smart gas meters in which have dead batteries after only 2 years because they have been fitted without the smart electric meter and its constantly sending out a connection signal to the absent electric meter to pair up .

Scottish Power probably do believe this can't happen as they never seem to fix/replace any blank screen meters.

You re right about Scottish Power..and a lot of customers love their blank screen little Ampy electric meters paying a monthly estimated direct debit..Some told me they were making the most of it and using electric fires to heat the house and saving on the big winter gas bills.

The meter would be deemed so defective that it couldn't be used for billing. I'd suggest you make an official complaint ASAP. Many people have tried really hard to lower their bills so I'd also suggest that last years use would be higher.

IHD in home display is not displaying readings for gas. IHD is working fine for the electricity readings.
