Miscalculated NCD

My insurance is up for renewal and I have realised I missed a years no claims - I should have 4 rather than 3. I contacted my current provider to ask if they can change my NCD proof from 2 to 3 and I have proof of 3 years from my previous provider. They have stated that as I said 2 years at the start of the policy there is nothing they can do. Is this right?

Probably. No claims discount is just a marketing gimmick - the are no hard and fast rules on how insurers have to apply it, or even whether they have to offer it at all. If your insurer agreed to take you on and quoted for you with 2 years NCD then I'm not sure that there's any principle beyond goodwill that says they have to go back and modify their records to retrospectively credit you with 3 to correct your mistake.

You could try asking your next insurer if they will accept your two letters as proof of 4 years in total, but at best you will have to sit for a while in the phone to get through to someone who can help you. And they might say no.

Have you checked how much difference it actually makes? The difference between three and four years might be less than you think - if it's only a few pounds you may not think it's worth the hassle.
